Soita Mummolle

Surveys’ results

Hei!
Here are some short surveys about the communication habits of Finnish people among their family (parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren).
By answering them you can support the Soita Mummolle campaign and research (and eventually win a Stockmann 30€ gift card!)

BUT NOW THE SURVEY IS CLOSE!

The winner of the Stockmann Gift Card is announced personally via e-mail.
324 people replied to the main survey and I want to thank them for their help! I didn’t get a good panel for the “over 60” survey, so for the moment I won’t publish any result: I will try to get more answers by personal interviews.
I will analize more in details the results and publish them on this blog (analyzing patterns according to age and sex for example), but for the moment you can check the general results from the answers:

Some reflections looking at the rough data come into my mind:

1) Women were more sensitive to the topic and more interested in replying to the survey.
2) The connection to parents over the phone is quite good, but it drops significantly regarding the grandparents. I would define worrying a 31% saying that they call the grandparents “once or less than once a year”.
2) 46% visit grandparents just few times per year. Anyway, also regarding parents, the situation is not so bright: over 60% said to visit either once a month or few times a year.
3) It’s true Finns tend to move a lot. Only 28% live in the same city/area of their parents and only 19% live in the same city/area of their grandparents: this means respectively 1 on 3 and 1 on 5, roughly. In these conditions of course it’s more difficult to mantain very tight relationships with the family. But it’s also probably a cultural factor: compared for instance to my homecountry, Italy, where a lot of people living in the north has grandparents in the deep south of the country, I have the impression that we tend at least to call more often (otherwise our grandmothers would call us, asking pissedly where have we been for all that time).
4) Phone remains the king of the tools for remote communication. That’s why Soita Mummolle puts an accent to this simple action: you might not be able to visit, but at least call!

Some reflections coming into your mind? Please, share them with us! 🙂
